Errr… lets see. Lady Blackhawk… inherited. Black Canary…inherited. Barbara Gordon…inherited. Huntress…inherited. That’s what she’s working with now. As for others…  Stephanie Brown… inherited. Cassie, Power Girl, Mia, Kara, Courtney, Rose… INHERITED. Many of them are even PRE-CRISIS characters, including the current Birds lineup. Ok, Helena got a little re-imagined post-crisis (in my brain, she’s still somehow magically Bruce and Selina’s kid, but that’s SOOO another story), but the point is… they were inherited

Ok, While I agree that there’s epic whitewashing with DC’s regular female lineup, it’s not like Gail said… HOW CAN I KEEP BoP AS WHITE AS POSSIBLE?? Would I love to see more female PoC and more female queer characters? hells yes. But I know it’s not like some kind of Gail Simone conspiracy to keep a good gay down or something. There is Rene Montoya and there’s Batwoman, so I know they’re TRYING at least. Could they try harder? SURE. But I think we’d be ditching some characters that people’ve gotten really attached to if we just dumped some portion of DC’s lineup in order to get a lineup of male and female heroes that more closely reflects the actual makeup of the population in any given group.

Long story short… it’s a tough area. In part because there is still a lot of work to be done in fiction toward making characters that reflect the diversity of human experience (shit—I’m still waiting for my fat, myopic super hero librarian), and in part because we’ve inherited a lot of characters who have been portrayed a certain way for a long time, and people have grown to love them. I still has a butthurt sad over the senseless killing of Ted Kord, and there’s a guy who stinks of white, straight male privilege :)

I don’t think it’s fair to pin the problem, or the potential solution on one single writer, especially when there’s a lot of history and future-planning that’s put on the heads of a variety of writers and editors.

…

Also, Gail, you can always toss Cassandra Cain into BoP for some diversity ;) But that’s just cos I miss her awesomeosity regularly in a Bat-book.
