Esoterica: Fantasy Genre and POC
I find it sooo damn funny when White people use the whole “it’s historical, you darkies weren’t there” and blah blah blah reason to justify the exclusion of POC from fantasy fiction. Yet when POC have just the one fantasy book, or game about them White people want to…
I will never EVER understand “noo it’s not historicallll” because yes, yes it was. People from Africa, Asia, the middle east, etc. moved freely about the world. There may not have been MANY in England in 1100, but they weren’t unheard of and ‘unrealistic.’ Also… IT IS FANTASY. There were also no dragons or magic in 1100, but you have THAT in your story. This is also the ridonkulous reasoning for not having females in positions of power in fantasy stories as well. Let me repeat: THERE. WERE. NO. DRAGONS. it can be based on a land or culture or point in history, but if you”re bothering to throw in magic and dragons and such, why not throw in some PoC or wimminz? I think fantasy is GREAT! We can invent a place and time of OUR choosing, and populate it with whomever we wish, be it elves or ogres or ladies with purple hair who are married to other ladies who happen to have been born in a place similar to Persia. Yeah.
